Being a step Dad , when the kids biological Dad is a real cunt.

Long story short , I have a mate ...........

Nahhh Me , I do not have kids , 40 years old. A life of pathos and chaos.

Said I would never re-marry after 16 years of marriage.

Kids have anger issues due to a shitty angry Dad , but act like angels to me. 5 the boy 8 and 9 the girls.

What is it like to become a step Dad , any horror stories , does the biological Dad , continue to be a cunt , or does he sort his life out and try to be Super Dad and cause problems for the Step Dad.

Any experiences good or bad that you good whoers feel happy to share.

It helps a bit if the former partners have each buried their respective hatchets and are getting on with life.

Either way, so far as the kids are concerned, never try to be a replacement, but always be a step-parent. Only the kids can decide where their affections lie and they're quite capable of loving a biological and step-father equally.

I found that trying to spin everything their father does in a positive light is a great help, even if it really sticks in your craw - if it's bitchy remarks or snidey digs, suggest to the kids that it's maybe his way of showing that he really misses them. Reinforce that at every chance; trust me they'll give you a hell of a lot of respect for that and it will show as they grow - even if they do "see through it all".

I was with a family in similar circumstances and the kids, who were of similar age to the ones in your situation seemed to gain something from someone showing a positive side to everything - so much so, they still call me up to chat to this day, and their mother & I separated in 1995.

Keep a smile on your face - you'll get a garden of roses from all that bullshit.

People that act the cunt usually do it to get a reaction. Nothing annoys them more than not getting one.

Noone really appreciates what kids go through and they really need support and positive encouragement..

My dad was abit of a cunt, but I still didn't appreciate my step dad reminding me of the fact at every opportunity.. :)

Great post Mike. Excellent advice in there - something I'll need to remind myself of when it gets tough with my kids. I'm not a step parent but that advice is excellent for most parenting, and social, situations.

I met my missus (God love her) at college and we went our separate ways before meeting up again after our marriages broke up.I had no kids but she had two boys,6 and 4...we got no financial help from their Dad at all...he phoned up one day and said he was having problems with his car so could he not pay us for a few weeks...that was October 1990...he hardly ever had the boys for the agreed weekends and would stump up at Christmas with a pile of presents for them...it really wound me up and I would disappear if I knew he was coming round...the youngest lad was a dream,called me Dad and was a great kid to be around and now he's married with his own kids.He's more than once taken me to one side and thanked me for being there for him,he has very little to do with his real Dad,who appears occasionally but it's cordial at best...as for the eldest,he acted like a spoiled brat from the word go..if he couldn't have his own way or have something he wanted,he'd sulk for days and be a pain the arse...seemingly determined to wind me up.He's now 32 and married to a lovely girl...she's changed him and this Christmas,I got a card from him thanking me for being his Dad since 1992...about bloody time too...swings and roundabouts...rewarding in some ways but I wouldn't do it again !

Just do not want it to come to blows , as he is abusive and aggressive , the Dad , not Will.

Fear the youngest, the Boy, he will manipulate and poison , he is seriosuly toxic.

Yet Mikes Advice is the perfect way to handle it.

A friend of mine was mostly brought up by her step-dad. She idolises him and hates her biological father. Try to do the right thing and you should be fine.

Every individual is different so some may handle things better than others.

As for the nasty dad, I would guess with time he will be less of a cunt the ex wife could be the problem she has to let him dissapear from her head and not go mental at every oppertunity.
